What is a Clinical Learning Environement?

A Clinical Learning Environment (CLE) is an audited primary care service such as a GP practice, Care Home, Primary Care Network or Federation.

A CLE provides a setting of realism where learners can apply their skills and knowledge to achieve their competencies.

It is our ambition that all primary care services become CLEs, and that all learners get to experience working within primary care. Upon qualification, and dependent on their placement experience, we believe learners will then choose primary care as their preferred employer.

This will ensure a sustainable workforce that is fit for the future.

Types of Learners

If you are a practice that trains medical students or doctors to become GPs, then you will already have developed your own ideas about how to structure a learner’s working week.

Each type of learner requires support to identify their learning needs to achieve their competencies. Whilst there are differences in some learning outcomes, there are a lot of similarities between learners. This allows your whole team to be involved in supporting and training any type of learner.

We currently facilitate four types of learners: Trainee Nursing Associates (TNA), Nurses, Paramedics and Physician Associates (PAs).

This has the potential to expand due to the new roles coming to primary care.

How to become a Clinical Learning Environment

The process of becoming a Clinical Learning Environment begins by making contact with us.

When we receive your expression of interest, we will link you in with the appropriate team member from one of our four locality training hubs to discuss the opportunity further.

We will support your practice manager with completion of the North West Educational Audit, that we pre-populate to speed up the process. On your behalf,  we will send the completed audit to one of our associated North West HEIs for approval.

Once the audit is approved, we will visit your learning environment for final sign-off as well as completion of our Educational Agreement.
